Inverse Growth-Solo Exhibition of ZHAO Rong
Preface by CHENG Xi
The very moment I stepped into ZHAO Rong’s studio, I was convinced that his studio is one with the greatest utilization and was also convinced of the saying “art is life, and life is art”.
He lives a daily life in an artistic way, and works as an artist in a living way.
He does not work, yet he is at work at every moment, for he has a working manner of his own. He neither leads a life deliberately, nor works as an artist deliberately; everything follows his temperament, and thus his works present a state of freedom and ease. He is enamored with media of various kinds and has attempted employing much of them in works. Graduated from the Printmaking Department of CAFA, not only does he master printmaking by all kinds of means, but also he devotes himself to oil painting, ink painting, installation, etc., and the media used by him vary from paper, cloth, acryl to aluminum, copper, steel, ceramic, hair and so on. Beyond all these, he also has an enormous interest in archeology, more particularly, visiting ancient architectures and historic and cultural relics all around the nation that have been forgotten long behind, making video recordings thereof, interviewing, writing, in hope of arousing more attention to those precious memories about to be lost otherwise.
In current times so much into materialism, such a way of living is without any doubt alternative and even “unreliable” in the eyes of many others. Actually, each one has a different understanding of the meaning of life, some seek after a materially abundant life, while he pursues the freedom of soul.
ZHAO Rong adopts a divergent thinking, and the works of his, no matter in any kind of media, all demonstrate a state of full freedom and ease, which is exactly the most desired condition of art-making. The mood of “playing with art” renders him “immature” in any way. Now he is a father of a two-year-and-a-half boy who also exhibits a great talent and interest in painting, and both the father and the son have participated in an international art exhibition held in Spain. So, quite naturally, he makes art every day while accompanying his son to “play with art”. In his son, he comes into a discovery of something closer to the essence of art and life, and he has been trying to convey his understandings to his works, expecting resonances.
Perhaps, he will always remain in this state, a child never growing up, and maybe this is an inverse growth.
