Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986)
La Vie au Grand Air
Born in 1894 into a wealthy upper class family of the Parisian bourgeoisie, Jacques Henri Lartigue (1894-1986), enjoyed a carefree existence since his early childhood· He never went to school, never served in the army or in the war, and was never tied down by professional obligations·
On his eighth birthday his father gave him his first camera· From that day forward and until the age of 92, he was an inveterate, tireless recorder of his world, instants of which he personally and meticulously arranged in 135 albums· Recognized much later as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century (he considered himself a painter), his amateur, intimisticapproach to photography resulted in an awe-inspiring testimonial of his time·
His work has been repeatedly exhibited and published throughout the world ever since it was donated to the State in 1979· We are well acquainted with it and yet critical appraisal has endlessly wavered between nostalgia and awe, since he was both an amateur intent on capturing the charm of the Belle Epoque and one of the inventors of modern photography·
The dual perception comes into play from the start of the exhibit since the world full of joy displayed within is as seen through Lartigue’s resolutely optimistic eye· He used photography to painstakingly and meticulously record everyday life: games, family trips, portraits of friends, sporting and social events…
Lartigue possessed a particular talent to successfully capture the most fleeting moments, especially moving bodies and objects blissfully frozen in mid-air: jumps and summersaults, speeding automobiles, plunges and high dives…
Both an observer and a narrator of a privileged life even in slightly harsher times, he was relentless in recording every moment in order to ultimately place them in his precious albums· He began very early on to obsessively collect and organize snapshots, select and crop prints· Throughout his life, he devoted time and hard work to photography but nevertheless readily claimed himself to be an amateur, also daily spending time writing and painting· He was even quite known as a painter in the 1920’s and 30’s· However, to his great surprise, a small exhibit of his work in 1963 in New York’s Museum of Modern Art brought him world renown as a genius of photography·
This exhibit presents images selected from the 135 large, original, 52 x36 albums arranged and with captions by Lartigue, an amazing photography journal of 14,423 pages that spans the twentieth century· Also presented in display cases, a collection of original format fac-similes (album and diary pages with sketches), provide a better grasp of Lartigue’s work·
Regardless of his being an “amateur”, Lartigue was a connoisseur constantly on the lookout for innovative techniques that he could use· Thus, his work may be that of an amateur, but nevertheless one with a passion and a relentless desire to learn·
